Educational Background

Fani Willis grew up between California and Washington, D.C., mostly raised by her father, a defense attorney and former Black Panther member. She graduated from Regina High School in Maryland before moving on to Howard University, where she studied political science and graduated cum laude in 1993. After that, she earned her law degree (JD) from Emory University School of Law in 1996.
Career

Willis started her legal career as a solicitor, working on misdemeanors and local ordinance violations. She spent 16 years in the Fulton County District Attorney’s office, where she built her reputation as a tough prosecutor. Her most famous case during that time was leading the prosecution in the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal, which ended with multiple educators convicted under Georgia’s RICO law in 2015.
In 2018, she went into private practice and later became Chief Municipal Judge in South Fulton. In 2020, she ran for District Attorney of Fulton County and won, taking office in January 2021.
As DA, she launched several high-profile investigations, including the racketeering case against Young Thug and members of his YSL label, as well as the election interference case against Donald Trump and 18 others.
Controversies

Willis’ career has also been marked by controversy. Her most significant challenge came during the Trump election interference case. She was accused of having a conflict of interest after it became public that she had a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she hired for the case.
Although she argued that the relationship did not affect the case, the Georgia Court of Appeals ruled that the appearance of impropriety was enough to disqualify her and her entire office. The Georgia Supreme Court later upheld that decision, permanently removing her from the prosecution in 2024. Despite this setback, Willis has remained vocal about respecting the legal process while disagreeing with the court’s ruling.
