Career

Letitia James began her career as a public defender before working as counsel in the New York State Assembly and later as an Assistant Attorney General in Brooklyn. In 2003, she won a seat on the New York City Council, representing the 35th district until 2013. During her time on the Council, she chaired committees on economic development and sanitation, while also being active on other committees.
In 2013, she was elected New York City Public Advocate, becoming the first Black woman to hold citywide office in the city. She held the role until 2018, when she successfully ran for Attorney General of New York.
As Attorney General, James has taken on high-profile cases, including lawsuits against major corporations and political figures. Most notably, her office filed a civil case against Donald Trump and the Trump Organization, accusing them of financial misconduct. Although a large penalty was later reduced on appeal, the court upheld findings of wrongdoing. James also briefly ran for governor in 2021 but later dropped out and ran again for Attorney General, winning reelection.
Controversies

James’ work as Attorney General has placed her in the middle of several controversies. Her lawsuit against Donald Trump drew both national praise and criticism, depending on political lines. In 2022, she publicly revealed that she had an abortion early in her political career, a statement that sparked debate but also positioned her as a strong supporter of abortion rights.
More recently, her office opened an investigation into the law firm Abrams Fensterman over its debt collection practices for nursing homes. The probe is focused on whether the firm improperly sued relatives of nursing home residents for unpaid bills, even when those individuals were not personally responsible. The firm denies wrongdoing and is challenging a subpoena from James’ office in court.
