DUOYE DIRI BIOGRAPHY

Douye Diri was born on June 4, 1959, in Sampou, a community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. He hails from the Ijaw ethnic group and was raised in a modest Christian family.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Douye Diri began his primary education at Okoro Primary School, Sampou, which later became Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School, Kaiama. He proceeded to Government Secondary School, Odi, where he obtained his West African School Certificate. He later attended the College of Education, Port Harcourt, where he earned his National Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1985. Driven by a passion for learning and leadership, Diri went on to the University of Port Harcourt, where he obtained a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree in Political Science in 1990.
CAREER

Douye Diri began his career as a teacher in government schools, serving in rural areas of the then Rivers State (now Bayelsa State). His early experience in education inspired him to engage in youth development and community service.
In the early 2000s, he became the Executive Secretary of the Centre for Youth Development, Bayelsa State (2000–2002). Later, he was appointed Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Bayelsa State, a position he held between 2005 and 2006.
Diri’s political journey within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) began to take shape when he became Chairman of the PDP Disciplinary Council in Bayelsa State in 2012. He later served as Deputy Chief of Staff at Government House, Bayelsa (2012) and Principal Executive Secretary (2013–2014). In 2015, he was elected to the House of Representatives, representing the Kolokuma/Opokuma/Yenagoa Federal Constituency. His strong grassroots support and political maturity earned him further recognition, and by 2019, he was elected as Senator for Bayelsa Central Senatorial District.
His political career reached its peak when he became the Governor of Bayelsa State on February 14, 2020, following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified the election of David Lyon due to irregularities in his running mate’s certificate. Despite facing several legal challenges, the Court of Appeal upheld Diri’s mandate later that year.
CONTROVERSIES

Diri’s governorship emerged through controversy when the Supreme Court annulled the results of the November 2019 Bayelsa State governorship election, which initially declared APC candidate David Lyon as the winner. The court’s decision, based on discrepancies in Lyon’s running mate’s credentials, made Diri the rightful winner, leading to widespread political tension and mixed public reactions.
In August 2020, a tribunal ruling attempted to nullify his election, but the decision was later overturned by the Court of Appeal, affirming his position as governor. He was also reportedly involved in a minor controversy in 2021 regarding bypassing airport security procedures in Lagos, though the issue was quickly resolved without major fallout.
