Orji Uzor Kalu was born on April 21, 1960, in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. He grew up in a relatively modest family and displayed entrepreneurial instincts from a young age.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Kalu attended Christ the King School in Aba and Government College, Umuahia, before proceeding to Barewa College in Zaria. He later matriculated at the University of Maiduguri, where he studied political science and became active in student politics. His participation in the “Ali Must Go” protests led to his suspension. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Abia State University and completed an executive program in business administration at Harvard University.
CAREER
Kalu’s entrepreneurial journey began early when he expanded from trading palm oil into furniture manufacturing, transportation, and other sectors. He eventually founded SLOK Holding, a diversified conglomerate with interests in media, oil and gas, shipping, manufacturing, and banking. Kalu entered formal politics in the early 1990s, serving in the House of Representatives (1992–1993). He was later elected Governor of Abia State in 1999 and served two terms until 2007. He also ran for President in 2007 under the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA). In 2019, he was elected Senator for Abia North under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has held leadership roles in the Senate.
CONTROVERSIES
Kalu’s political and business careers have not been without controversy. After his tenure as governor, he faced corruption and fraud charges. In December 2019, a Federal High Court convicted him and sentenced him to 12 years’ imprisonment for fraud related to his time as governor.
