Educational Background

Lawal Musa Daura attended public schools in Daura before moving on to higher education. He studied at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he obtained his first degree in the late 1970s.
He later received professional and strategic training at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, a key institution for senior public officers in Nigeria. He also undertook other postgraduate and professional courses related to security and intelligence work.
Career

Daura began his security career in 1982 when he joined the defunct National Security Organisation (NSO). In 1986, the NSO was restructured by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida, leading to the creation of the State Security Service (SSS), where Daura continued his service.
Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks and served as Director of Security in several states, including Kano, Sokoto, Edo, Lagos, Osun and Imo. His roles involved intelligence gathering, internal security coordination, and advising government authorities.
In July 2015, he was appointed Director-General of the SSS. He served in that position until August 2018, when he was removed from office following a controversial security operation at the National Assembly. His tenure placed him at the centre of Nigeria’s security decision-making during a challenging period.
After retirement, Daura largely stayed out of public view until recently, when he began speaking openly about insecurity in Katsina State and neighbouring areas. He has since expressed interest in public service, saying his motivation is driven by concern for the safety and welfare of the people.
Controversies

The most notable controversy associated with Lawal Musa Daura occurred in August 2018, when security operatives blocked access to the National Assembly during a tense political period. The incident drew widespread criticism and raised concerns about the role of security agencies in political affairs. Shortly after the event, Daura was dismissed from office by then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
Beyond this episode, he has also faced public scrutiny over broader debates about the politicisation of security agencies in Nigeria, an issue he has since criticised himself, arguing that security work should remain professional and intelligence-driven.
