
Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, widely known as Tokunbo Abiru, is a Nigerian banker and politician with decades of experience in finance and public service. Born on 25 March 1964 in Lagos State, he is currently the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, a position he assumed in December 2020 after winning a bye-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Educational Background

Tokunbo Abiru holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Lagos State University. He also attended executive programmes at top business schools, including the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and the Senior Management Program at Lagos Business School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
Career

Abiru built a strong career in banking before moving into public service. He served as an Executive Director at First Bank of Nigeria between 2013 and 2016. Earlier, he was the Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State from 2011 to 2013 under the administration of Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).
In July 2016, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) appointed him as Group Managing Director of Skye Bank to manage its takeover and stabilise the bank. His leadership during the transition led to the successful emergence of Polaris Bank Limited, where he later served as CEO.
Abiru has also sat on several boards, including Airtel Nigeria, FBN Capital, FBN Bank Sierra Leone, and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated 150,000 face masks to public primary schools across Lagos East. In August 2020, he resigned from Polaris Bank to contest the Lagos East senatorial election, which he won in December of the same year.
As Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Abiru played a key role in raising funds for the state, including the issuance of an ₦80 billion bond, which earned Lagos international recognition. He also helped uncover over 5.5 million previously unregistered taxpayers and improved revenue generation from land charges.
In the Senate, Abiru has focused on legislation, empowerment, and long-term development. He has sponsored important bills such as the Nigeria Insurance Reforms Act and the Copyrights Amendment Act, both of which have been signed into law. In August 2023, he was named Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking in the 10th Senate.
