Salisu began his career as a legislative aide, where he gained practical experience in lawmaking and public administration. His work and loyalty within the APC earned him an appointment as Chief of Staff to Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2019. In that position, he played a key role in coordinating government activities and advising the governor.

In 2023, he contested and won the Ogun Central senatorial seat, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Olumide Aderinokun. Salisu polled 96,759 votes, while his closest rival secured 52,440 votes.

Controversies

Sen. Afolabi Salisu Controversies

In March 2025, Senator Salisu came into the national spotlight following his role in the Senate’s move to stop the proposed US$1 billion acquisition of Lafarge Africa Plc by China’s Huaxin Cement Company. Acting on a motion sponsored by him, the Senate directed the Bureau of Public Procurement to suspend the deal, raising concerns about national security and economic control.

The decision sparked debate, as Lafarge Africa had long been majority-owned by foreign investors, including Swiss company Holcim Group. Critics questioned why national security concerns were being raised at this stage. Some senators, including Jimoh Ibrahim and Binos Yaroe, warned that the action could discourage foreign investment and interfere with regulatory agencies.

Observers also noted that Ogun State, Salisu’s home state, hosts major cement plants, including one owned by Dangote Cement, leading to speculation about possible industry interests. Despite the criticism, Salisu maintained that his actions were in Nigeria’s long-term economic interest.

Senator Salisu also made headlines after dismissing claims by the Labour Party (LP) that the APC’s digital membership registration was fraudulent. Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta after launching the APC e-registration in his ward, he described the allegations as baseless and politically driven.

He argued that the registration exercise is an internal APC matter and questioned the LP’s authority to comment on it, especially given its internal leadership disputes. According to him, the digital process improves transparency, prevents inflated figures, and ensures accurate membership records.

Salisu explained that the new system uses technology and links data with NIN, INEC, and NIMC, making the process more secure and credible. He added that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote digital governance and strengthen internal democracy within political parties.
