Owusu was born to Ghanaian parents and raised in an immigrant community in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the youngest of three children of Grace and Albert A. Owusu Sr. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies and Studio Art (with distinction) from the University of Virginia in 2005. Akosua Adoma Owusu began her professional career working as a post-production assistant on Chris Rock’s HBO documentary Good Hair (2009). Soon after, she shifted her focus to making her own short and experimental films.
