
Koo Nimo, born Kwabena Boa-Amponsem (later baptized Daniel Amponsah), is one of Ghana’s most respected traditional musicians. He was born on 27 January 1931 in Foase, a village in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. By his early twenties, around the time Ghana gained independence in 1957, Koo Nimo had already earned national respect for his calm acoustic guitar style and deep storytelling through Twi music.

Career

Koo Nimo’s music career took off in 1957 when he formed the Addadam Agofomma ensemble, which brought him national attention. His music blends palm-wine, highlife, jazz, and Afrobeat, using traditional instruments like drums, bells, rattles, and acoustic guitars.
In 1990, eight of his songs were released on a CD titled Osabarima, making him the first Ghanaian artist to have work released on compact disc.
He later became a Professor of Ethnomusicology, teaching at the University of Washington and the University of Michigan in the United States. In 2006, he returned to Ghana and settled in Kumasi. In 2007, he appeared on the American TV show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, where he shared his music and culture with a global audience.
