Educational Background
Segun Akinlolu studied at the University of Ibadan, where he earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1992. After graduation, he worked as a veterinarian for about eight years. He also obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma from the Nigeria Institute of Journalism, showing his interest in communication and media.
Career
Beautiful Nubia began writing songs at the age of nine. He grew up around Yoruba oral poetry, folklore and traditional theatre, which shaped his style of music. In 1997, he founded EniObanke, his own music production and marketing company. The name means “The King’s Beloved.” He released his first album under this label the same year. Since then, all his albums have been released through EniObanke.
In 1998, he formed his band, Beautiful Nubia and the Roots Renaissance Band, in Lagos. He remains the main songwriter, composer, arranger and band leader. He plays guitar, sings lead and backup vocals, and sometimes percussion.
In 2010, EniObanke started the EniObanke Music Festival (EMUfest), the first festival in Nigeria focused on folk and roots music. The festival celebrates culture and conscious music.
In October 2016, he received an honorary Doctorate in Science (Honoris Causa) in Art from ESEP Le Berger University in the Republic of Benin, in recognition of his work in music. In March 2024, the University of Ibadan honoured him as a UI at 75 Ambassador for his achievements and impact.
