
Ilhan Abdullahi Omar was born on October 4, 1982, in Mogadishu, Somalia. She is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019. The district covers Minneapolis and some nearby suburbs. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Before going to Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Omar made history as the first Somali American in Congress and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota. She is also one of the first two Muslim women elected to the U.S. Congress, alongside Rashida Tlaib.

Educational Background

Omar spent her early childhood in Somalia. When civil war broke out, her family fled the country and stayed for four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. In 1995, they moved to the United States and later settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She became a U.S. citizen at age 17.
