Educational Background
Justice Ayo Salami attended Lyeru Okin African Church School in Offa, then moved to St. Cyprian’s Catholic School and later Offa Grammar School. He subsequently attended Provincial Secondary School Rumfa College in Kano, from which he graduated in 1963. He served as Senior Prefect at Offa Grammar School and held leadership positions at Rumfa College. Career
Salami began his career as a Collector of Customs and Excise Grade II before transitioning to the legal arm of government. In 1971, he joined the North Central State Public Service Commission as State Counsel Grade II.
He rose through the ranks to serve as Acting Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary at the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice, before being deployed to his home state of Kwara in 1976 as Senior State Counsel and later as Acting Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice in Ilorin.
He was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Justice in 1978, and in 1988, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal, where he later served as Presiding Justice in Benin, Kaduna, and Lagos. Justice Salami’s tenure as President of the Court of Appeal ended in controversy. In 2011, the National Judicial Council (NJC) suspended him after he publicly alleged that then-Chief Justice of Nigeria Aloysius Katsina-Alu had summoned him and attempted to influence the outcome of a Sokoto governorship election appeal. He refused to apologise to Katsina-Alu, whom he accused of interference.
An NJC panel found him to have lied under oath in an affidavit before the Federal High Court, leading to his indefinite suspension and a recommendation for his compulsory retirement. He never returned to the bench, retiring at the mandatory age of 70 on October 15, 2013.
Many observers, including lawyers and civil society groups, viewed his suspension as political retaliation for his refusal to yield to pressure and his decisions that went against the ruling PDP. The NJC itself reversed its decision in May 2012 and recommended his reinstatement, but President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration disregarded the recommendation.
