Career

Ralph Nwosu Career

Nwosu is a practising lawyer and businessman. He owns and runs St. Flairs, an award company, and Digital Oxygen Hub Ltd, a technology business, among other ventures. He has spent much of his career at the intersection of civil society, law, and opposition politics. He was the founder and served as the pioneer National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party registered on January 22, 1995. Under his leadership, the ADC carved out an identity as a grassroots party committed to multiparty democracy and as an alternative to the dominant PDP and APC.

The party fielded presidential candidates in multiple election cycles including Patrick Utomi in 2007, Obadiah Mailafia in 2019, and Dumebi Kachikwu in 2023. While none of these candidates won, the ADC consistently held its own as a credible minority party with elected members at federal and state levels. Nwosu also previously served as President of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) of Nigeria, the umbrella body for registered political parties, and co-chaired its election committee in 2016.

In 2018, he welcomed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) into the ADC fold, significantly raising the party’s profile. In 2019, he led the ADC into a broad coalition the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) aimed at ending President Buhari’s re-election.

His most consequential political move came in 2025, when he stepped down as ADC National Chairman to allow former Senate President David Mark to lead a new coalition structure, positioning the ADC as the principal vehicle for the opposition going into 2027. In an interview, he publicly revealed that he had rejected an offer of three ministerial slots and N10 billion in exchange for abandoning the coalition effort. He declared that he chose Nigeria’s democratic future over personal gain, stating that he did not want the country to become a one-party state.

Controversies

Ralph Nwosu Controversies

Following his resignation in July 2025, a leadership crisis erupted in the ADC between the David Mark-led faction and a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala, a former Deputy National Chairman. Nwosu dismissed Bala’s claims to party leadership as illegitimate, describing him as someone who joined the party in 2022, resigned in May 2025, and was therefore not entitled to claim the chairmanship. Nwosu also accused APC governors and party leaders of sponsoring the ADC leadership crisis, alleging that the ruling party was using INEC and proxy figures to undermine the opposition coalition ahead of 2027.
