Educational Background
Chukwunyere Nwabuoku holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, and a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree in Financial Management from Commonwealth University, Belize. Career
Nwabuoku began his civil service career with the Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), where he rose to the position of Principal Accountant between 1992 and 1995. Between 2001 and 2003, he served at the National Assembly as Special Assistant to the Senate President on Public Affairs, providing advisory services on media and related matters. He later served as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja from May 2019 to March 2021.
In May 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, following the EFCC’s suspension of Ahmed Idris over alleged N80 billion fraud. Controversies
Nwabuoku was alleged to have laundered funds amounting to N868.46 million while serving as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021. He was arraigned on a nine-count money laundering charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja on January 15, 2025.
In March 2026, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Nwabuoku on all nine counts and sentenced him to eight years imprisonment on each count, a total of 72 years, without the option of fine.
The judge ordered that the sentences run concurrently. The court found that between 2019 and 2021, his accounts grew from less than N3 million to tens of millions, funded through shell companies and associates. Evidence also showed he voluntarily refunded over N220 million during the investigation.
