Educational Background
Michael Aondoakaa attended Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School in Makurdi, one of the most prestigious schools in Benue State. He then gained admission to the Faculty of Law at the University of Maiduguri, where he earned his LL.B degree. He also attended the Nigerian Law School at Victoria Island, Lagos.
Career
After being called to the bar, Aondoakaa built a successful private legal practice and eventually became a senior partner at a law firm for 18 years. He was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), one of the highest designations available to Nigerian lawyers.
His path into government came through an unexpected encounter. He was accompanying two friends, former Benue Deputy Governor Ogiri Ajene and Professor Daniel Saror who were being considered for ministerial appointments, when he was invited to interview with President Yar’Adua and was himself offered the portfolio of Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
During his time in office from 2007 to 2010, he was involved in overseeing the review of investment laws in Nigeria, developing the legal framework for public-private partnerships, implementing Nigeria’s obligations under the United Nations Human Rights Council, and ensuring the country upheld its international treaty commitments. He served on several presidential committees including those on the sale of the Aluminium Smelting Company of Nigeria to Rusal Aluminium and on Hydrocarbon Bitumen and Heavy Oil Exploitation.
He also chaired the Ministerial Committee on the Review of the African Peer Review Country Report on Nigeria and the Reform of the Petroleum Trust Development Fund. He was elected a member of the Governing Council of UNIDROIT the UN International Institute for the Unification of Private Law.
He won the Man of the Year 2007 award from the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, the African Meritorious Service Award in 2008, the Nelson Mandela Gold Award for Leadership in 2008, and a Leadership Award from Clear Corporation UK in 2009.
After leaving office, Aondoakaa joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, having earlier announced his retirement from partisan politics when he left the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014. He pursued the APC governorship ticket for Benue State in 2022 but lost to the eventual candidate, Hyacinth Alia. He later attempted to challenge the outcome in court, without success.
Controversies
In 2010, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee stripped Aondoakaa of his SAN rank on the basis of several petitions arising from actions he took while in office as Attorney-General. The rank was later restored to him.
He also became entangled in controversy surrounding the Mambilla Power Plant arbitration case at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. Reports emerged that he agreed to testify against Nigeria in the case brought by Sunrise Power, a company seeking $2.354 billion from the Nigerian government over an alleged breach of contract tied to a power plant deal from 2003.
In March 2026, Aondoakaa resigned from the APC, stating that prevailing circumstances made it necessary to step aside. His resignation took effect from March 28, 2026. While he did not immediately disclose his next political move, observers noted his likely ambition to contest the 2027 Benue State governorship election on a new platform.
