Personal Life
Music ran in Daddy Yankee’s blood from the start his father, Ramón Ayala Sr., was a professional salsa percussionist, and his mother also came from a musical family. As a teenager, his first dream was not music but baseball. He was a talented enough player to earn a tryout with the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball.
However, at the age of 17, while taking a break from a studio recording session with reggaeton pioneer DJ Playero, he was struck by a stray AK-47 round during a nearby gang shootout. The bullet lodged in his right hip and was never removed. His baseball career ended that day.
