Alhaji Ahmadu Abubakar was born on September 15, 1942, in Muye, present-day Niger State, Nigeria. He was born into the family of the renowned Islamic scholar Malam Abubakar and received his early Islamic education under his father’s guidance before beginning formal schooling.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Ahmadu Abubakar attended Okene Secondary School before completing his Advanced Level studies at King’s College, Lagos between 1962 and 1963. In 1977, he obtained a Diploma in Management from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
CAREER
Ahmadu Abubakar began his public service career in 1964 with the Ministry of Agriculture in the former Northern Region of Nigeria. He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Chief Produce Officer with the Niger State Government.
In 1980, he transferred to the Federal Civil Service as Administrative Secretary at the National Population Commission, where he later served as Acting Executive Secretary. In 1985, he joined the Federal Ministry of Finance as Assistant Director and was promoted to Director in charge of Home Finance the following year.
As Director, he oversaw banking and finance matters, served as Secretary of the Federal Revenue Allocation Committee, represented the ministry on the board of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), and chaired the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company.
On January 3, 1990, he was appointed Director-General (Permanent Secretary) of the Federal Ministry of Finance, where he played a central role in formulating and implementing Nigeria’s economic policies. In June 1992, he became Minister of Finance and Economic Development, serving until January 1993.
