Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, born 1 July 1972, is a Nigerian lawyer, academic and politician who currently serves as the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He previously represented Osun Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate from 2019 to 2023 and served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Osun State.

Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru was born and raised in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. He was born into the family of Basiru Akanmu Adebayo, while his mother was from the Alawe Compound in Osogbo.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Basiru began his primary education at Salvation Army Primary School, Oke-Fia, Osogbo, before proceeding to Laro Grammar School, Oke-Fia, where he obtained his secondary school certificate. He also studied Arabic and Islamic Studies at Ma’had Zumaratul Solheena Afonta and Osun Islamic Theological College in Osogbo.
He initially studied Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin between 1989 and 1992 before switching to law. He later attended the University of Lagos, where he obtained his LL.B. degree in 2000. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar. He subsequently obtained an LL.M. from the University of Lagos and earned a Ph.D. in Property Law from the same university in 2016.
CAREER
Basiru began his professional career as a legal practitioner. He worked with established law firms, including Olaniwun Ajayi Chambers, before becoming a partner at M.A. Banire & Associates. He also ventured into academia and served as a lecturer at Osun State University.
Political Career
Basiru’s political career developed through progressive involvement in Nigeria’s political system. He was associated with the Alliance for Democracy, which later evolved through the Action Congress and Action Congress of Nigeria before becoming part of the All Progressives Congress.
During the administration of former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Basiru served as Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties from 2010 to 2014. He was subsequently appointed Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Osun State, serving from 2017 to 2018. In 2019, Basiru contested for the Osun Central Senatorial seat on the platform of the APC and was elected to the 9th National Assembly.
During his time in the Senate, he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, NGOs and Civil Society before becoming Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, making him the official spokesperson of the Senate. He also served on several other committees, including Air Force, Downstream Petroleum, Judiciary and Petroleum Resources. After leaving the Senate in 2023, Basiru was elected National Secretary of the APC in August 2023. He retained the position at the party’s 2026 national convention.
In January 2025, President Bola Tinubu appointed him Chairman of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC). As of 2026, Basiru remains the National Secretary of the APC, where he is involved in the administra.tion and political organisation of Nigeria’s ruling party.

Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru is married to Habibat Basiru, who is also a legal practitioner and has served as a magistrate in the Osun State Judiciary. The couple have three children: Omobola, Ajibola Jr. and Mobolaji. Basiru is also known for his interest in education, law, public service and political empowerment. He is the founder of the Alubarika Movement, a social and political empowerment organisation.
