Rt. Hon. James Abiodun Faleke is a Nigerian politician, businessman, logistics expert and legislator. JAMES ABIODUN FALEKE BIOGRAPHY
James Abiodun Faleke was born on Christmas Day, 25 December 1959, in Ekinrin-Adde, Ijumu Local Government Area, Kogi State. He was born into the family of Pa Benjamin Faleke and Mrs Janet Omorewo Faleke. He spent his early years in his hometown before moving on to pursue his secondary and higher education.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Faleke attended Baptist Day Primary School, Ekinrin-Adde, and later proceeded to Abdulazeez Atta Memorial College, Okene, for his secondary education. He subsequently attended Kaduna Polytechnic, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Purchasing and Supply Management in 1986, graduating with Upper Credit. He was reportedly recognised as the best student in his class.
Faleke later obtained an MBA in Business Administration, specialising in Management, from Imo State University, Owerri. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), London, and a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration.
CAREER
Before entering politics, Faleke built a career in procurement, logistics, clearing and forwarding, warehousing, distribution and business management. During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in 1986/87, he worked at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, as a Purchasing Expediter. He later worked at Kayo Foods Limited, Tate Industries PLC, Air Liquid PLC and the Aluminium Manufacturing Company of Nigeria (ALUMCO) PLC. He subsequently served as Commercial Manager at Crown Agents Ltd.
Political Career
Faleke entered active politics in 2003, when then Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him the pioneer Executive Secretary of the newly created Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA). He was subsequently elected Chairman of Ojodu LCDA in 2004 and served two terms until 2011.
While serving in local government, Faleke also became Chairman of Conference 57, the body representing Lagos State’s local government chairmen. He was also involved in various state-level committees and advisory bodies.
In 2011, he was elected to the House of Representatives, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency of Lagos State. He has since been re-elected several times and, as of 2026, is serving his fourth term in the National Assembly.
During his legislative career, Faleke has chaired and served on several important committees, including committees dealing with anti-corruption, public procurement, public accounts, interior, science and technology and petroleum subsidy matters. He has also sponsored legislation relating to NYSC insurance and national security.
2015 Kogi Governorship Election
In 2015, Faleke became the running mate to Abubakar Audu, the APC governorship candidate in Kogi State. The APC ticket won the highest number of votes in the election, but Audu died before the final declaration of results.
Following Audu’s death, the APC selected Yahaya Bello, who had finished second in the party’s primary election, to continue the contest. Faleke challenged the decision and argued that he should succeed Audu as the party’s candidate. The dispute eventually reached the Supreme Court, which ruled against Faleke’s position. Faleke subsequently returned his focus to his legislative career in Lagos.
House Committee on Finance
Faleke has become particularly prominent through his work on public finance. He currently chairs the House Committee on Finance, where he oversees issues involving fiscal policy, government revenue and budget-related matters. He has also been involved in constituency development initiatives in Ikeja, including infrastructure and empowerment programmes. CONTROVERSIES
The most significant controversy in Faleke’s political career arose from the 2015 Kogi State governorship election. Following the death of Abubakar Audu before the election results were formally declared, Faleke argued that he should become the APC’s governorship candidate and continue the race. The APC instead selected Yahaya Bello, leading Faleke to challenge the decision in court. The matter eventually reached the Supreme Court, which upheld the process that resulted in Bello becoming the party’s candidate.
