He was initially admitted to study English at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) but later transferred to the Faculty of Law, earning his LL.B (Hons) in 1980. After attending the Nigerian Law School, he was called to the bar in 1981. CAREER

Mike Ozekhome started his legal career with the Federal Ministry of Justice during his NYSC service year in Yola. He later worked with the National Provident Fund (now NSITF) as state counsel. In 1986, he established Mike Ozekhome’s Chambers, which has grown into a prominent law firm with offices in Lagos, Abuja, Benin City, and Agenebode. He has represented high-profile clients in landmark constitutional and human rights cases, establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s most respected constitutional lawyers.
Beyond litigation, Ozekhome has been deeply involved in activism. He co-founded and worked with various pro-democracy and civil rights groups, including the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), Joint Action Committee of Nigeria (JACON), and the Democratic Rights Agenda (DRA). He has also served as a delegate in national reform committees, including the National Political Reform Conference.

CONTROVERSIES

Critics have accused him at times of defending politicians and individuals with questionable reputations, raising debates about whether his human rights stance sometimes conflicts with his choice of clients. He was also kidnapped in 2013 by armed gunmen along the Benin-Auchi expressway and released after weeks in captivity, a traumatic event that drew national attention.
