CAREER

CAREER

Farouk Lawan began his political career in 1999 when he was elected to the House of Representatives, representing the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency of Kano State. He was re-elected in 2003, 2007, and 2011, serving four consecutive terms.

Over his legislative career, he chaired several important committees, including the House Committee on Finance. He also became known as the leader of the Integrity Group, a faction of lawmakers that spearheaded the removal of Speaker Patricia Etteh in 2007 over alleged corruption. This earned him the nickname “Mr. Integrity.”

In 2012, Lawan was appointed Chairman of the House Ad Hoc Committee investigating the management of fuel subsidies in Nigeria. His committee uncovered large-scale fraud in subsidy payments, which initially boosted his credibility as an anti-corruption crusader.

CONTROVERSIES

CONTROVERSIES

Lawan’s biggest controversy came during the fuel subsidy probe in 2012. He was accused of soliciting a $3 million bribe from businessman Femi Otedola to remove Zenon Petroleum from the list of indicted firms. Video evidence later surfaced showing him receiving $500,000 as part of a sting operation.

After prolonged legal battles, a High Court in Abuja in June 2021 found him guilty of corruptly demanding and receiving bribes. He was sentenced to seven years in prison, later reduced to five years on appeal. In January 2024, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction. Lawan served his sentence at Kuje Custodial Centre and was released on 22 October 2024 after completing his jail term.
