Idris Ichalla Wada was born on 26 August 1950 in Dekina, present-day Kogi State, Nigeria. He grew up in an Igala family and spent his early years in Northern Nigeria.

Wada attended Government Secondary School, Dekina and Federal Government College, Sokoto. He pursued aviation training at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, where he qualified as a professional pilot and later became a flight instructor.
