Idris Ichalla Wada was born on 26 August 1950 in Dekina, present-day Kogi State, Nigeria. He grew up in an Igala family and spent his early years in Northern Nigeria.

Wada attended Government Secondary School, Dekina and Federal Government College, Sokoto.
