Educational Background

Gbenga Komolafe completed his primary and secondary education in Ondo State before attending the University of Ilorin, where he earned a degree in engineering in 1987. He then went on to the University of Ibadan, earning a master’s in Industrial and Labour Relations in 1995 and another in Industrial and Production Engineering in 1998.

He also worked at the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) and held senior roles at NNPC, including Group General Manager of Crude Oil Marketing and Special Duties.
After the Petroleum Industry Act was passed in 2021, Komolafe was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the first CEO of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). During his tenure, he modernized the oil licensing process, introduced policies to reduce gas flaring to 7.16%, improved security at production sites, and increased Nigeria’s oil output from below 1 million barrels per day to over 1.6 million barrels per day.
