Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, born on 1 March 1955, is a well-known Nigerian politician from Abia State. He has represented the Abia South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate since 2007. Over the years, Abaribe has become known for his outspoken views, strong opposition politics, and long-standing presence in Nigeria’s legislative space. Educational Background
Abaribe attended Government College, Umuahia, where he obtained his West African School Certificate (WASSCE) in 1974. He later gained admission into the University of Benin, where he studied Economics. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1979 and completed a master’s degree in Economics in 1982. After his postgraduate studies, he worked briefly as a university lecturer.
Career
Between 1982 and 1985, Abaribe lectured at Edo State University. He later moved into the private sector, where he built experience in management and finance. From 1985 to 1991, he worked as the Area Manager for Southern Nigeria at SCOA Nigeria. He then became a Senior Investment Manager at NICON between 1991 and 1992. From 1993 to 1995, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Integrated Mortgage Company.
Abaribe entered politics in the late 1990s. In 1999, he was elected Deputy Governor of Abia State but left office in 2003 after political disagreements that led to his resignation and impeachment.
In 2007, he was elected into the Senate to represent Abia South, a position he has retained through multiple re-elections. During the 9th National Assembly, he served as the Minority Leader of the Senate, where he became one of the strongest voices of opposition.
In December 2025, Abaribe resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the defection of Peter Obi. He said the move was part of a wider plan to change Nigeria’s political direction and challenge the ruling party.
Controversies
In January 2020, Abaribe stirred national debate during a Senate session on rising insecurity in Nigeria. While contributing to a motion, he openly asked then-President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if he could not handle the country’s security challenges. He reminded the Senate that Buhari had once told Nigerians during his 2015 campaign to hold him accountable if he failed to deliver on security. His remarks drew widespread reactions across the country.
In June 2018, Abaribe was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja over his role as a surety for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). His arrest attracted public attention and criticism from civil rights groups. He was released on bail after four days in detention.
