Educational Background
Bamanga Tukur studied abroad and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States. In recognition of his contributions to national and continental development, Benue State University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. He is also a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria.
Career
Tukur rose to national prominence in the mid-1970s when he became the General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). At the time, Nigeria was facing serious port congestion due to heavy importation, especially cement. During his tenure, new ports were developed to improve efficiency and reduce delays.
In 1983, he was elected civilian Governor of the old Gongola State, which later became Adamawa and Taraba States. His time in office was brief, lasting only three months before a military coup ended the democratic government.
After leaving government, Tukur went fully into business and founded BHI Holdings, also known as the Daddo Group of Companies. He later returned to public service as Minister of Industry between 1993 and 1995.
Tukur has held several international and continental roles. He served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable (ABR), Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, and has been part of several global investment and advisory councils, including UNIDO and the OECD Africa Investment Advisory Board. He is currently the life patron of the African Business Roundtable. In March 2012, with the backing of President Goodluck Jonathan, he was elected National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a position he held until January 2014.
Controversies
Tukur’s time as PDP National Chairman was marked by internal party crises. In August 2013, a major faction within the PDP broke away to form what was called the New PDP, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and seven serving governors.
The disagreement weakened the party and increased pressure on Tukur. Despite initially insisting that only a party convention could remove him, he resigned on 15 January 2014 amid intense political pressure. Earlier in his career, he was also mentioned among senior officials who acquired large farmlands under various River Basin authorities, a move that attracted public criticism at the time.
