Educational Background
Wamakko attended Sokoto Teachers’ College between 1968 and 1972. After completing his studies, he later gained admission to the University of Pittsburgh in the United States. He graduated in August 1980 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. After returning to Nigeria, he went back to teaching at the Sokoto Teachers’ College.
Career
Wamakko began his working life as a teacher from 1973 to 1977. After his university education, he moved into public service, starting as a Principal Assistant Secretary in Zurmi Local Government Area, where he later became Acting Secretary.
He also worked in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area and was appointed Chairman of Sokoto Local Government between 1986 and 1987. Later, he became the General Manager of the Sokoto State Hotel Management and Tourism Board. In March 1992, he was appointed Director-General of Careers and Special Services in the Governor’s Office, Sokoto State.
Wamakko entered elective politics in 1999 when he was elected Deputy Governor of Sokoto State under Governor Attahiru Bafarawa on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He was re-elected in 2003 but resigned from the position on 15 March 2006.
In 2007, he contested and won the governorship election of Sokoto State on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform and assumed office on 29 May 2007. His election was later annulled in 2008 due to party membership issues, leading to a re-run election. Wamakko won the re-run and returned as governor, serving until 29 May 2015. He was succeeded by Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
During his time as governor, he introduced several programmes, including the State Poverty Reduction Agency (SPORA), which focused on youth skills acquisition and poverty reduction.
Controversies
Wamakko’s political career has not been without controversy. In 2008, his initial election as governor was annulled after a court ruled that he was still a member of the ANPP when he contested under the PDP.
There were also political tensions between him and his predecessor, Attahiru Bafarawa. In 2009, the Sokoto State Government under Wamakko set up a commission of inquiry to investigate alleged financial mismanagement during Bafarawa’s administration. Bafarawa claimed the probe was politically motivated and accused Wamakko of attempting to damage his reputation.
In recent years, Wamakko, now a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, has also been involved in political disputes with the PDP. He has repeatedly denied PDP claims that the party executed certain projects in the state, describing such claims as false and misleading. He insisted that some projects, including the Asari Water Scheme, were initiated during his administration but were later abandoned by succeeding governments.
