Educational Background

Iya Abbas was born in Yola, Adamawa State, in 1973. He began his education at Central Primary School, Uba, in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State. In 2000, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Bayero University, Kano (BUK). He later returned to the same institution and obtained a Master’s degree in Treasury Management in 2008.
Career

After completing his studies, Aminu Iya Abbas undertook his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) between 2001 and 2002 at Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG). He later worked with Sigma Securities before joining the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he served as a forensic expert and was among the pioneer accountants of the commission. Between 2008 and 2011, he worked with Africa Petroleum Nigeria and KPMG. He is a Chartered Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner, with strong experience in finance and investigation.
Iya Abbas entered politics in 2011 when he was elected to represent the Uba/Gaya constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly. During his first term (2011–2015), he held several leadership positions, including Chief Whip, Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Leader, Deputy Chief Whip, and served on various standing committees.
He lost his seat in the 2015 election but remained active within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In 2019, he made a comeback, won the election, and was chosen as Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, a position he held until 2023.
In 2023, he contested and won the election for Senator representing Adamawa Central, defeating former senator Abdul-Aziz Nyako. In the 10th Senate, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology. One of his major motions addressed the repeated flooding caused by the overflow of River Benue, which has affected several local government areas, including Fufore, Yola North, Yola South, Girei, Numan, Lamurde, and Demsa. He highlighted tragic boat accidents and loss of lives linked to flooding and blamed the situation on the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam. To prevent future disasters, he proposed the construction of the Dasin Hausa Dam as a long-term solution.
He also sponsored a motion calling for the establishment of a military base in Hong Local Government Area due to renewed attacks by insurgents. During Senate debates, he raised concerns over repeated attacks on some communities which led to deaths, destruction of homes, churches, schools, and mass displacement of residents. The Senate later urged security agencies to strengthen their presence in the affected areas and directed NEMA to provide relief materials to victims.
