Health benefits of Soursop

Soursop also known as graviola is the fruit of Annona muricata native to the tropical regions of the Americas. It provides a good amount of fiber and vitamin C. It also contains magnesium, potassium, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, folate and iron. Different parts of the plant such as the leaves, roots and stems can be used medicinally. However, in this article, I shall be looking at the health benefits derived from taking the fruit or its extract.

1. May kill cancer cells:

Early research shows that soursop can help kill cancer cells and can help reduce tumor size and enhance the activity of the immune system.

2. Fights bacteria:

Studies show that soursop contain antibacterial properties especially bacteria that cause oral diseases such as gingivitis, tooth decay and yeast infection. It also showed that soursop extract can help fight against the bacteria responsible for cholera and staphylococcus infections.

3. Contains antioxidants:

These are compounds that help neutralize harmful compounds called free radicals which can cause damage to cell. Soursop is high in antioxidant and therefore can prevent cell damage and lower the risk of chronic diseases.

4. Serves as a diuretic:

Soursop can be a very effective diuretic as it can clean the gastrointestinal tract and remove excess toxins and salts from the body. It can also reduce parasites in the guts and alleviate the pain or irritation in the stomach and colon.

5. Ease pain:

Soursop can be applied to wounds and injuries but can also be taken orally to relieve pain and speed up healing process. Due to the sedative and antiinflammatory components of soursop, it becomes an ideal remedy for both internal and external body pain.

6. Help regulate blood sugar levels:

Soursop has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. However, this must be taken in a high concentration for it to be effective.

7. Fights inflammation:

Soursop is also believed to have antiinflammatory properties and can be effective in treating inflammatory disorders like arthritis.
