Educational Background
Samia Suluhu obtained her secondary education at Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1977.
In 1986, she obtained an advanced diploma in Public Administration from the Institute of Development Management (present-day Mzumbe University).
Suluhu obtained a post graduate diploma in economics from the University of Manchester and an MSc in Community Economic Development from Open University of Tanzania and the Southern New Hampshire University.
Career
Prior to joining politics, Suluhu worked with Ministry of Planning and Development as a clerk.

In 1992, she was employed on a project funded by the World Food Programme. She worked with World Food Programme till 1994
In 2000, Suluhu joined politics. She was elected to represent Zanzibar in the House of Representatives. She was appointed Zanzibar Minister of Labour, Gender Development and Children by President Amani Karume.
In 2005, she was re-elected into the House of Representatives and was appointed the Zanzibar Minister of Tourism, Trade and Investment by President Amani Karume.
Samia Suluhu was elected as a member of the parliament to represent constituency of Makunduchi in the National Assembly. She secured 80% of the votes. She was appointed the Minister of State for Union Affairs by President Jakaya Kikwete.
In 2014, Suluhu was appointed to chair the Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting Tanzania’s new constitution.
Vice Presidency
In 2015, after John Magufuli won the party primaries, he picked Samia Suluhu as his running mate and potential Vice President of Tanzania under the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
Magufuli and Suluhu won the general election and were sworn in as President and Vice President respectively in November 2015.
Samia Suluhu was the first female Vice President of Tanzania.
In 2020, Magufuli and Suluhu were elected for a second term in office.

In March 2021, Suluhu announced the passing of the incumbent President Magufuli. She was sworn in as the 6th President of Tanzania.
