Gabriel Suswan was born on the 15th of November 1964 in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. He is a Nigerian politician and former governor of Benue State. Gabriel Suswan is a Senator of the 9th assembly, of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In 1999, he won a seat in the House of Representatives under the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) to represent his constituency. This seat was re-elected in 2003. Gabriel Suswam is married to Architect Deaconess Yemisi Dooshima Suswam and they are blessed with two children, both males.

Gabriel Suswam had his primary Education at NKST Primary School, Zaki-Biam, Benue State, and began his Secondary Education at St.Andrew’s Secondary School, Adikpo, and completed it at Government College, Markurdi.

Gabriel Suswan subsequently proceeded to the University of Lagos where he bagged a degree in Law. He also went for his Compulsory One year Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar. He had his Master in Law at the University of Jos and also had a Master in Public Administration from the University of Abuja.

Gabriel Suswam was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1990 and he began his career in Private Law practice in the Corporate legal firm of Tokode & Company based in Lagos. In the year 1994, he established his own Law firm, Tingir & Associates, based in Lagos.  

Due to the expansion his law firm experienced, he relocated to Abuja and had a partnership agreement with a colleague, Harris Ogbole, after which they both formed the firmoutswamm, Ogbole & Co. Gabriel Suswam later resigned from private legal practice and ventured into Politics.

In 1999, he won a seat in the House of Representatives under the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) for the Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency to represent his constituency. In 2011, he was re-elected for a second term in office and he is a Senator of the 9th assembly, of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He worked for other law firms from 1990 to 1994, while continuing his studies, In 1994 he launched his law firm.

He was appointed Chairman of the House Services Committee, and later Chairman of, the House Committee on FCT. He ran again and was reelected in 2003. On 3 July 2003, he was appointed Chairman of, the House Committee on Appropriation, then in August 2005, he was appointed Chairman of, the House Committee on Power.

In April 2007 he was elected Governor of Benue State. In November 2009, he spoke in favor of the automatic re-election of all political officeholders who exemplified themselves in the discharge of their responsibilities. In a separate interview, he said politicking was the major factor militating against the development of the state since its creation.

Gabriel Suswan ran for a second tenure in the 26 April 2011 gubernatorial elections on the PDP platform and won. On the 28 March 2015 general elections, Gabriel Suswan lost the senatorial seat election to Chief Barnabas Gemade of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gabriel Suswam is always controversial and has been in a lot of troubled waters as the Federal Government, once accused him and two others of diverting N9.79 billion. The funds which were meant for a police reform program and Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, were allegedly diverted between 2012 and 2015 while Gabriel Suswan was the governor of Benue State. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also accused him of embezzling funds.

Gabriel Suswam was reported physically assaulted his wife over an intense argument relating to Suswam’s mistress named Shidoo, who is believed to be heavily pregnant with her husband, in the United Kingdom where they went on vacation, and he was arrested. Gabriel Suswan claimed the statement said that the publication was a concoction of some mischief makers, and aimed at bringing Mr. Suswam down by all means.

Gabriel Suswan denied either beating or having any quarrel with his wife as reported in some sections of the media. Gabriel Suswan said the report is full of mischief and aimed at slandering him and his dear wife, saying: “Please disregard any news about a squabble between me and my dear wife. We’re fine,” Mr. Suswam said in the statement. The former governor further directed his lawyers to press charges against all media organizations that published the report.
