As he started to gain attention for his eclectic blend of afrobeat and dancehall-inspired tracks, the young DJ became motivated to showcase his talents beyond the church community.
In 2007, his father asked him to curate the music for their church’s Christmas party, which proved a turning point in his career. For the next couple of years, he wove together a blend of classic African hits and contemporary pop tracks, eventually gaining recognition from churchgoers who started to book him for events outside the church. Controversies
Nigerian ace disc jockey, Michael Babatunde Adeyinka, popularly known as DJ Tunez, aired his thoughts on Wizkid’s recent comment about rap music.
Recall that Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, in a recent interview with a British magazine, made it known that he doesn’t listen to rap anymore because he believes the genre is boring and dead, a statement that got a lot of reactions, including from Nigerian rappers like M.I., Blaqbonez, Ladipoe, Oladips, and others. Following the reactions, Wizkid went on to broke-shame Nigerian rappers, calling them “dumb f**ks” as well.
DJ Tunez, the American-based DJ who has served as Wizkid’s official DJ for the past five years and is known as a core member of the Starboy Entertainment family as well as the Grammy-nominated singer’s right-hand man, has a different take on the situation.
Taking to his social media on Monday, December 5, 2022, DJ Tunez opined that the rap conversation was being taken too far and that Wizkid wasn’t talking about Nigerian rappers when he made the initial interview. Tunez went to urge the public that the primary focus should be on pushing African music.
