André Onana’s career began in his youth when he joined Barcelona in 2010 after starting out at the Samuel Eto’o Foundation. However, due to being minor and extracommunitary, he was loaned to the youth team of UE Cornellà for one season in 2012.

He was then loaned again to the first team of UD Vista Alegre for another season. In early January 2015, it was announced that Onana would join Dutch club Ajax in July 2015, although the transfer was brought forward later that month. He made his debut for Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie in February 2015. He signed a new contract with Ajax in May 2017, extending it until 2021. In March 2019, he signed another contract extension, this time until June 2022.

André Onana expressed interest in playing in the Premier League in England in November 2019. However, in February 2021, he was banned from playing for 12 months by UEFA after testing positive for a banned substance called Furosemide.
