Career

After his studies, Tuggar worked in the private sector, notably as the CEO of Nordic Oil and Gas Services, an energy consulting firm. He also contributed his political and economic opinions to Nigerian newspapers and magazines.

Yusuf Maitama Tuggar represented Gamawa in Bauchi State as a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives from May 2007 to May 2011. During his tenure, he served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, focusing on government spending in the oil and gas industry, education, health, and water resources. He played a role in the creation of the National Council on Public Procurement and worked on the Local Content Bill, particularly concerning oil and gas. Additionally, he sponsored a bill on improving the humane transport of livestock.

In 2011, Tuggar ran for the Governor of Bauchi State as the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, securing second place amid allegations of fraud and violence. In 2013, he joined the All Progressives Congress and participated in the governorship primaries, finishing third.

Controversies

During his ambassadorship, in March 2020, Tuggar attended a meeting with Siemens in Germany regarding projects in the Nigerian power sector. The chief of staff to the president, Abba Kyari, who was present at the meeting, later tested positive for COVID-19. As a precautionary measure, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar ordered the closure of the Nigerian embassy in Berlin and tested negative for the virus.
