Kashim Ibrahim-Imam hails from a family deeply involved in Nigerian politics. His father, Ibrahim Imam, was a key figure in the progressive Borno Youth Movement. Kashim Ibrahim-Imam pursued higher education, earning degrees in Political Science and International Economic Relations from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and the University of Maiduguri. He subsequently ventured into the banking industry.

He earned the title of “Mutawalli Borno,” signifying his role as a senior counselor to the Shehu (traditional ruler) of Borno. Interestingly, he maintained a childhood friendship and business partnership with his political rival, Ali Modu Sheriff.

During Nigeria’s Third Republic, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam held the position of Borno State chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). However, his tenure in this role was cut short when he was removed by the then-governor, Maina Maaji Lawan. He was also a part of Hope 93, a political group actively involved in the campaign for MKO Abiola during the 1993 elections.

With the advent of the Fourth Republic, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam continued to be a significant political figure. He was appointed as the Presidential Liaison Officer to the Senate at the beginning of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

In the PDP primaries held in February 2003 to select the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Borno State, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam ran for this position, partly to prevent Lawan from becoming governor once more. He secured a resounding victory in the primaries, obtaining 177 out of the 185 votes cast. In the subsequent April elections, he faced Ali Modu Sheriff, who represented the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Sheriff won the election with 581,880 votes, while Kashim secured the second position with 341,537 votes for the PDP. Notably, he contested again in the 2007 elections but was once again defeated by Ali Modu Sheriff.

In April 2008, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of ordering the demolition of his house due to his loyalty to former President Obasanjo. Atiku refuted this claim.

Despite the challenges and setbacks in his political career, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam has remained a significant figure in the political landscape of Borno State.
