Hamza Al-Mustapha (born 27 July 1960) is a retired Nigerian Army major, intelligence officer, and politician. He is most renowned for his role as the Chief Security Officer to Head of State General Sani Abacha from 1993 until General Abacha’s death on 8 June 1998.

Hamza Al-Mustapha’s educational background indicates that he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1983. This military education marked the beginning of his career in the armed forces.
He served as Aide-de-camp (ADC) to Chief of Army Staff, General Sani Abacha, from August 1985 to August 1990, later clarified as Chief Security Officer. His exceptional powers and close relationship with his superiors established him as a prominent figure in the military.
Trained as a military intelligence operative, Al-Mustapha held various command posts in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Security Group of the Directorate of Military Intelligence, and conducted operations in various countries, including Chad, Liberia, Bakassi, Gambia, and Sierra Leone.
He played a pivotal role in the regime security during General Sani Abacha’s rule, earning the respect and fear of many, including superiors. He reorganized Nigeria into six geopolitical zones, establishing an extensive network of spies and informants.
After General Sani Abacha’s death on 8 June 1998, Al-Mustapha was removed from office and arrested. His time in captivity included torture, solitary confinement, and psychological torment.
He was accused of plotting coups, charged with crimes related to targeted killings, involvement in drug trafficking, and conspiring to overthrow the government. In 2010, he was acquitted of most charges. However, he wasn’t cleared of the alleged murder of Kudirat Abiola, which led to further legal proceedings.
After his release, Hamza Al-Mustapha entered politics, forming the Green Party of Nigeria (GPN) and later running for the presidency. His political career continued with multiple election attempts.
