Herbert Wigwe’s career began at Coopers & Lybrand in Lagos as a management consultant, where he later became a chartered accountant.
Subsequently, he worked at Capital Bank before joining GTBank, where he rose to the position of executive director in charge of institutional banking.
In 2002, Wigwe, along with his business partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, acquired Access Bank. Under their leadership, the bank experienced remarkable growth, climbing from the 65th largest bank in Nigeria to the 4th largest by 2017.
Additionally, Wigwe served in various leadership roles, including Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investment & Securities Limited, and Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS). At the time of his passing, he was also the Chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited.
Wigwe’s legacy extended beyond the business world. He played a pivotal role in creating The Access Conference, a thought leadership series aimed at addressing global challenges. The event brought together influential leaders to discuss topics such as sustainable leadership and innovation.
