Fabian Ngozichukwu Chinedum Osuji, born on January 20, 1942, in Umuoda, Nguru, Aboh Mbaise, Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, was a Nigerian politician who served as the Federal Minister of Education from July 2003 until March 2005. Educational Background

Fabian Osuji attended Holy Ghost College, Owerri, Government College Umuahia, the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, and the University of Ibadan. He also undertook post-doctoral research at Imperial College London.

Career

After completing his education, Osuji embarked on an academic journey. He held various positions at the University of Ibadan, including lecturer, senior lecturer, and associate professor in the Department of Zoology. He also served as a visiting scientific fellow at the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Additionally, Osuji held multiple deanships at Imo State University and served as a visiting professor at several universities within and outside Nigeria.

Fabian Osuji transitioned to politics in 1990 after retiring from Imo State University. He contested the Imo State Governorship candidacy under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 but was disqualified by the Federal Government of Nigeria shortly before the elections. Despite this setback, he served as the Imo State Commissioner for Information and Social Development from 1994 to 1996. Osuji later became the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from 2000 to 2003. In July 2003, he was appointed as the Federal Minister of Education, a position he held until March 2005 when he was dismissed due to allegations of bribery.

Controversies

Osuji’s political career was marred by controversy when he was dismissed from his position as Minister of Education in March 2005 following his indictment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly offering bribes to the National Assembly to pass an inflated budget. However, in June 2010, an Appeal Court in Abuja quashed all charges against him, criticizing the government’s actions as “embarrassing, barbaric, and uncivilized.”

Fabian Osuji held numerous traditional titles, including the Dike Eji-Eje Mba of the Mbaise clan. He was married to Philomena Osuji and had two daughters, three sons, and six grandchildren.
