Career

Before assuming the role of Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olukoyede worked as a lawyer at a law firm owned by former Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo. He served as the Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman from 2016 to 2018 and later as the Secretary to the Commission from 2018 to 2023. Olukoyede’s nomination as Secretary to the EFCC in 2018 was made by the-then President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

His appointment as the Executive Chairman of the EFCC in 2023 was made by President Bola Tinubu. Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson during the announcement of Olukoyede’s appointment for a four-year tenure, stated that Olukoyede has 22 years of regulatory compliance consulting, fraud management, and business intelligence experience. Olukoyede is also a member of the Fraud Advisory Panel, United Kingdom, and the Federal Government Technical Committee on the Repositioning of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

Controversies

In October 2023, two legal suits were filed aiming to remove Olanipekun Olukoyede as EFCC Chairman, citing procedural irregularities. One filed in Kano sought to restrain Olukoyede from exercising his duties pending trial, while another in Abuja questioned the legitimacy of his appointment.

In response to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s alleged corruption case, EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede recently stated he would resign rather than abandon the investigation. Olukoyede recounted attempting to personally contact Bello to address the charges, but Bello refused to appear before the commission, insisting that EFCC come to his village for his arrest. Olukoyede vowed to pursue the case and warned of legal consequences for anyone obstructing Bello’s arrest, escalating the controversy surrounding Bello’s alleged corruption.
