Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe, born on July 19, 1965, is an Ethiopian statesman who held the office of Prime Minister from 2012 to 2018. Prior to becoming prime minister, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs under Meles Zenawi from 2010 to 2012. Following Meles’ death in August 2012, Hailemariam was appointed acting prime minister and subsequently elected chairman of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) on September 15, 2012. He also served as the chairperson of the African Union between 2013 and 2014, playing a pivotal role in regional diplomacy.

Educational Background

Hailemariam completed his undergraduate studies in civil engineering at Addis Ababa University in 1988. Afterward, he worked as a graduate assistant at the Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (now Arba Minch University). He later received a scholarship to Tampere University of Technology in Finland, where he earned a master’s degree in sanitation engineering. In 2006, he furthered his education with a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University in California, USA.

Career

Hailemariam began his professional career in academia, serving as a lecturer and eventually becoming the dean of the Arba Minch Water Technology Institute. Transitioning into politics, he rose to prominence within the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) and later within the EPRDF. He served as President of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region (SNNPR) from 2001 to 2006.

Hailemariam was later appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, where he played a key role in Ethiopia’s foreign relations.
