Ssali attended Kikungiri Primary School and Kigezi High School. His secondary education faced interruptions, leading him to drop out in the 1960s. During his youth, he enlisted as a paratrooper in the Uganda Army. In 1976, seeking refuge from Idi Amin’s oppressive regime, Ssali moved to the United States, where he pursued higher education, earning bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Cross-Cultural Communications from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Shaka Ssali began his journalism career at the Voice of America (VOA), initially co-hosting Africa World Tonight. In 2000, he launched Straight Talk Africa, a program dedicated to discussing political, economic, and social issues affecting the African continent. His unique style, engaging interviews, and ability to challenge African leaders made the show one of VOA’s most influential programs.

Throughout his career, he interviewed prominent figures such as Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, Zimbabwe’s late President Robert Mugabe, and Tanzania’s former President Jakaya Kikwete. He became known for his signature opening phrase:
“I’m profoundly honored and exceedingly humbled.”
