Educational Background
Hamza Zubairu Masu began his education at Masu Primary School between 1976 and 1982. He went on to study at Wudil Teachers College from 1982 to 1985 and later attended Dawakin Kudu Science High School from 1985 to 1988.
He obtained his NCE in Physics/Chemistry from Gumel Teachers Training College from 1988 to 1991. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geography Education from Bayero University, Kano, and also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Management.
Career
Zubairu Hamza Masu started off as a school teacher and worked with the Kano State Ministry of Education as an Assistant Education Officer (AEO). He stepped into politics in 1996 when he was elected a councillor, and was later appointed as a caretaker councillor in 2001.
He served two terms as chairman of Sumaila Local Government, first from 2004 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2015. In 2007, he was appointed interim assistant administrative officer. He is currently serving as the Deputy Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and represents the Sumaila constituency.
Controversies
On May 12, 2025, Hon. Masu officially left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). In his resignation letter, he mentioned that internal issues, including factional crises and court disputes over party leadership, forced him to quit. He expressed disappointment over leadership struggles involving both state and national NNPP officials, which he felt were affecting the party’s future.
