Kafayat Sanni was born in 1997 in Nigeria. From an early age, she displayed discipline, curiosity, and a strong passion for aviation and the military.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Kafayat joined the Nigerian Defence Academy and was inducted into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on December 22, 2012. She trained at the 401 Flying Training School in Kaduna, where she excelled as a cadet and became the best overall graduating pilot in 2017.
Following this, she was selected for the United States Aviation Leadership Program. During her time there, she trained at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, for language studies and then moved to Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi, for flight training. She graduated with flying colors in August 2019.
CAREER
On October 15, 2019, Kafayat Sanni made history as the first female fighter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force. She was winged alongside 12 male pilots during a ceremony in Abuja.
She was deployed to fly the Alpha Jet, Nigeria’s primary combat aircraft, and participated in combat missions against insurgents, including operations targeting Boko Haram in the Northeast.
Beyond flying missions, she has also served as an instructor pilot, mentoring the next generation of Nigerian Air Force aviators.
In 2025, she achieved another milestone by winning the Best Allied Student and Best Assistant Commandant Paper at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Accra.
