Born on 21 April 1958 in eNhlwathi, Hlabisa, located in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. He grew up in a rural environment during apartheid-era South Africa.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Mchunu completed his secondary education in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. He pursued higher education at the University of Zululand, where he studied education and international relations. He later obtained further qualifications through the University of South Africa (UNISA), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986.
CAREER
Senzo Mchunu began his professional career as a teacher at St Augustine’s High School in Nquthu and Impande High School in Eshowe. His political journey began in earnest in 1991, when he joined the African National Congress (ANC) full-time. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the first Regional Secretary of the ANC in Northern Natal.
In 1994, he was elected as the ANC Provincial Secretary in KwaZulu-Natal, a role he held until 2005. He was appointed to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 1997 and later chaired several portfolio committees, including Agriculture, Social Development, and Education.
He served as the MEC for Education from 2009 to 2013 and was elected ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Chairperson in 2013. That same year, he became the 6th Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, serving until 2016.
At the national level, Mchunu was appointed as Minister of Public Service and Administration by President Cyril Ramaphosa in May 2019, and later became the Minister of Water and Sanitation in August 2021. In June 2024, he briefly served as Acting Minister of Agriculture.
Most recently, on 3 July 2024, Mchunu was appointed Minister of Police in South Africa.
CONTROVERSIES
In July 2025, Mchunu was placed on a leave of absence by President Cyril Ramaphosa due to allegations of corruption and collusion with criminal networks. The charges include claims of political interference in police operations and protection of certain criminal elements. A judicial inquiry led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Madlanga was established to investigate the matter. The allegations have been strongly contested by Mchunu and have stirred national debate, with opposition parties such as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) calling for his dismissal.
