Educational Background
Sani began his studies at Kagoro Teachers College, Kaduna, where he trained as a teacher in the early 1980s. His passion for learning pushed him further, leading him to Kaduna Polytechnic, where he obtained a National Diploma and later a Higher National Diploma in Marketing. After his youth service with the Bauchi State Ministry of Finance and United Bank for Africa, he went on to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing in 1998.
Career
Umar Sani’s career started in the classroom as a teacher under the old Kaduna Local Education Department. He later worked with the National Teachers Institute as a store officer before moving into procurement with Kada Payless Stores, Kaduna.
His entry into politics came during the Sani Abacha era when he became a founding member of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) in Kaduna State, serving as its administrative secretary. With the return of democracy in 1999, he joined the PDP and became its first administrative secretary in Kaduna State.
From 2003 to 2006, he served as Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters to the Kaduna State governor. When Namadi Sambo was elected governor in 2007, Sani became Director-General of Media and Public Affairs and was later promoted to Special Adviser on Media.
Following Sambo’s elevation to Vice President in 2010, Sani continued as his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity until 2015. Beyond this, Sani remained active in PDP affairs and played a role in the party’s 2019 campaign council as a spokesman.
Controversies
In 2025, Sani was caught in a public dispute with billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. Sani had linked Otedola to the fuel subsidy scandal of the Goodluck Jonathan era, claiming he benefitted massively from the scheme. Otedola denied the allegations, describing them as false and malicious, and threatened to file a ₦1 billion libel suit against Sani.
The businessman insisted that his company, Zenon Petroleum, never traded in petrol (which was subsidized) and only sold diesel, which was deregulated at the time. The clash drew media attention and highlighted the sensitivity around Nigeria’s subsidy scandals.

Sani was married to Hajiya Sahura Umar Tijjani until her death in June 2013 in Cairo, Egypt. The marriage was blessed with four children, three sons and one daughter. He has since remained devoted to raising his family while continuing his political and public engagements.
