Senator Nenadi Esther Usman is a Nigerian politician, economist, and public servant who has held some of the most senior economic and legislative positions in Nigeria. Educational Background
Nenadi Usman received her West African School Certificate from the Federal Government College, Jos, in 1982, and her IJMB from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1983. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from ABU, Zaria, in 1986, and later a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the University of Jos. She also holds a Master’s degree in Strategy and Security Administration from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, and a Master’s degree in Geography from ABU, Zaria. She went on to pursue a Doctorate in Geography.
Career
Nenadi Usman began her working life as a geography teacher at the Government Secondary School in Kagoro, Kaduna State, a role that cemented her belief in education as the most powerful tool of empowerment. She subsequently served as Managing Director of Dana Ventures and moved into government advisory work, serving as Executive Adviser on Youths and Sports in Kaduna State in 1992, and as Executive Adviser on Information, Home Affairs and Culture in 1993. From 1994 to 1998, she served as Principal Personnel Officer at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) in Abuja.
Following the return to civilian rule in 1999, she was appointed Minister of State for Finance under President Olusegun Obasanjo, later elevated to the full position of Minister of Finance, one of the most consequential economic portfolios in the Nigerian government. During her tenure, she focused on fiscal discipline, institutional reform, and strengthening key revenue agencies. She overhauled Nigeria’s Customs Service and played a central role in establishing the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, which introduced greater transparency and accountability in how government finances were managed.
In 2010, she won the PDP primary and district-wide general election for the Kaduna South Senatorial District, becoming the first female senator elected from the North-West geopolitical zone, a historic milestone that set a benchmark for women in Nigerian politics. She served as Senator from 2011 to 2015, using her platform to advocate for women’s rights, children’s welfare, water access, health, and youth employment. After leaving the Senate, she founded the Education and Empowerment Centre for Women in 2007 and remained active in women’s development work.

Controversies
In April 2016, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Nenadi Usman in connection with allegations that she received approximately N2.5 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria into an account named Ministry of External Affairs Library, which was allegedly transferred to a company account under her control and distributed to individuals and groups during an election campaign.
In June 2016, she was arraigned alongside former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and others before the Federal High Court in Lagos on a 17-count charge including conspiracy, stealing, and corruption, related to the alleged mismanagement of about N4.9 billion in public funds. She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of N250 million. The case went through multiple court sessions over subsequent years.

Personal Life
Nenadi Usman was born and raised in Jos, Plateau State. Though born in Jos, her roots are firmly in Southern Kaduna, where the Jere community of Kaduna State is her ancestral home. She was married to HRH Dr. Sa’ad Usman, the Emir of Jere in Kaduna State, who passed away in March 2020 at the age of 70 after suffering from a spinal cord condition. Together they had three children.
