Educational Background

Austin Achado began his formal education at St. Francis Primary School in Aliade, laying an early foundation in a community shaped by both faith and hard work. He proceeded to Mt. St. Gabriel’s Secondary School in Makurdi for his secondary education, one of the most respected schools in Benue State.

He then pursued his post-secondary education at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he obtained an IJMB Certificate, a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture, and a Master of Science degree in Architecture, making him one of the most thoroughly trained professionals to enter Nigerian politics from the Benue axis. He later attended capacity-building programmes consistent with his legislative and professional responsibilities.

Career

Austin Achado began his professional life in the Benue State Public Service in 1988, serving as a Pupil Architect and rising to the rank of Principal Architect before voluntarily retiring in 1996 after eight years of service. That same year, he founded Archtik Consultants, a firm that was granted Charter Registration by the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria in 2000. As Principal Partner and CEO, he assembled high-profile colleagues across architecture, engineering, quantity surveying, arbitration, and environmental consultancy, building Archtik into one of the more respected multi-disciplinary practices in the North Central region.
His architectural portfolio includes landmark institutions such as the Senate Building of the University of Maiduguri, the Senate Building of Kaduna State University, the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, and the design of the entire main campus of the National Open University of Nigeria.

He served as Chapter Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects Benue State Chapter from 2003 to November 2009, and as National Ex-Officio Member of the NIA from 2009 to 2011. He is a Fellow of the NIA, a Corporate Member of ARCON, a founding member of the Association of Consulting Architects Nigeria, and a Chartered Member of the Society of Construction Industry Arbitrators.
His political career began at the constituency level, where he distinguished himself through community interventions including the construction of township roads in Aliade, installation of electricity transformers, rural electrification projects, and the construction of a 2,000-capacity Catholic Church building in Aliade. He also established a scholarship scheme for indigent students at Benue State University and a Micro-Credit Scheme through Benysta Microfinance Bank for young entrepreneurs before ever seeking elected office. He is also the founder of Angus College Makurdi and Benysta College Makurdi.

He was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives for Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency and served two terms in the National Assembly. During his tenure, he initiated and presented four amendment bills before the House of Representatives, mobilised contractors to the Mbamar Dam project and the Shaana-Mbalom Road in Gwer East Local Government Area, and established the Achado EduCare Scholarship, a N20 million annual scholarship initiative for indigent students from his constituency covering both indigenes and registered voter residents. He made it a point to visit his constituency regularly, including sympathy visits to communities attacked by armed herdsmen, donating to local churches and institutions, and interfacing directly with youth groups and traditional rulers.

Controversies

Austin Achado’s most significant and current controversy is one that unfolded just days before the time of this publication, and it has set Benue State’s APC political landscape on fire.
On May 18, 2026, the APC National Assembly Primary Election Committee for Benue State, led by Sabiu Mahuta, announced the results of its primary elections in Makurdi. In the Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency race, Achado, the sitting two-term incumbent, was defeated by Terhemba Nongo, who polled a staggering 17,429 votes against Achado’s 729. The scale of the defeat was not merely a political loss. It was a rout that immediately became the most talked-about result from the entire Benue APC primary exercise.

What made the result explosive was the political context surrounding it. Achado is widely regarded as a loyalist of Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, the most powerful APC figure from Benue State at the federal level. Five other incumbent lawmakers associated with the Akume camp also lost their primary tickets on the same day. The pattern was unmistakable: the primaries produced candidates who were broadly believed to enjoy the support of Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, consolidating the governor’s influence over the party structure ahead of 2027 and dealing a direct blow to the SGF’s political network in the state.

Achado’s defeat from 17,429 votes to 729 in a primary against a relatively less prominent opponent raised immediate questions about whether the process had been conducted freely and fairly, with many political observers pointing to the sheer margin as evidence of significant manipulation. As of the time of this publication, no formal complaint had been filed, but the conversation about the result was still raging across Benue State political circles.
