David Babafemi Mauton Osunkoya, born on May 14, 1970, in Sagamu, Ogun State, and known across Nigeria simply as Femi Branch, is a veteran Nigerian actor, director, producer, and politician whose career spans more than three decades.
He is one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, known for his ability to deliver intense, layered performances across both English and Yoruba productions. In 2025, however, the headlines surrounding him shifted sharply from his work to his conduct, and the industry was forced to ask uncomfortable questions about accountability and power.

Educational Background

Femi Branch attended Satellite Town Primary School in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, before proceeding to Air Force Secondary School in Ikeja for his secondary education. He gained admission to Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, where he was initially enrolled in Religious Studies but graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dramatic Arts, a switch that set the direction for everything that followed. It was at OAU that his acting career quietly began.
Career

Femi Branch started acting in 1991 at Obafemi Awolowo University, featuring in a Yoruba stage play titled Eniyan. He later appeared in Orisun, a film produced by university staff, before his television debut in a 2003 MTN commercial. His big break came through the role of Oscar in the popular television soap opera Domino, which brought him into Nigerian living rooms and made his face one of the most familiar in the industry.
He has since appeared in over 100 films across English and Yoruba Nollywood. In 2018, he was installed as the Jagun Asa of Edeland by the Timi of Edeland, Oba Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, making him a traditional title holder. He stepped into politics in 2023, contesting as deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State. In 2025, he received a Best Lead Actor nomination at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Controversies

Femi Branch’s most damaging and most current controversy erupted in June 2025 and involved two separate but equally serious allegations that hit Nigerian social media simultaneously.
On June 18, 2025, during a production shoot in Lagos, he physically assaulted the first Assistant Director on set, slapping him in front of the entire cast and crew. A viral video captured the heated confrontation as crew members blocked him from leaving. He was heard shouting, “Did you bring me on this set to embarrass me?” He later apologised to the AD and the entire crew, but the film crew community released a formal statement describing the assault as a violation of both professional boundaries and basic human decency. Industry commentators pointed to the incident as a rare moment when the culture of unchecked ego in Nollywood was finally caught on camera.
While that story was still trending, Pastor Timilehin, a user on X, published an open letter accusing Branch of borrowing one million naira from his father, Mr. Akin Tolulope Komolafe, in December 2011 to fund his film Onile, at an agreed monthly interest of N50,000. According to the post, Branch had not repaid a single naira in over 13 years, with the accumulated debt now standing at N9.7 million. The post included a copy of the original loan request letter allegedly signed by Branch. When Sunday Scoop contacted him for a response, he declined to comment. The combination of the assault story and the debt allegation in the same week made June 2025 one of the most difficult public moments of his career.
