He also served in Nigeria’s public service, rising through the ranks before being appointed Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs under President Goodluck Jonathan. During Jonathan’s administration, he also served as the Supervising Minister of Power and Supervising Minister of Environment.
In 2015, Ishaku resigned from the Federal Executive Council to contest the Taraba State governorship election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Following his exit from office, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned him in September 2024 over allegations involving the diversion and mismanagement of approximately ₦27 billion in state funds during his tenure as governor. Ishaku pleaded not guilty, and the case remains before the court.
