DAME PRISCILLA KUYE BIOGRAPHY
Dame Priscilla Olabori Aderonke Kuye was born on 18 August 1940 in Lagos, Nigeria, and hails from Ijebu in Ogun State. She was born into a distinguished royal family; her father was Oba Luke Ademola Adekogbe, the traditional ruler of Ikija-Ijebu, while her mother, Queen Elizabeth Adeyemi Adekogbe, was an educator.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Kuye attended St. James’ Primary School and St. Anne’s School, both in Ibadan, before completing her secondary education at St. Theresa’s College, Ibadan.
Although she initially aspired to study medicine, she pursued a career in law. She earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of London in 1966, attended Gray’s Inn, London, and later completed her professional legal training at the Nigerian Law School. She was called to the Nigerian Bar on 19 June 1967. In addition to her legal qualifications, Kuye trained as a State Registered Nurse (SRN) at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.
CAREER
Dame Priscilla Kuye began her legal career with Burke and Company before establishing her own law firm, Priscilla O. Kuye & Company, in 1970, where she served as Principal Partner.
She steadily rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Bar Association, serving as National Financial Secretary, Third Vice President, Second Vice President, and First Vice President before making history as the first female President of the NBA, serving from 1991 to 1992. To date, she remains the only woman to have held the office.
During her tenure, she championed the rule of law, judicial independence, and human rights, particularly during Nigeria’s military era. She later became a Life Bencher and served as an NBA Trustee from 2004 to 2019.
In 1981, Pope John Paul II conferred on her the title of Dame of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, recognizing her outstanding service to the Catholic Church and society. She also declined appointments to both the Court of Appeal and the office of Attorney General of the Federation.
