TUNDE KELANI BIOGRAPHY
Tunde Kelani was born in Lagos in 1948 but spent much of his childhood in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he lived with his grandparents from the age of five. His grandfather was the Balogun of Ijaiye Kukudi, and growing up in Abeokuta exposed Kelani to Yoruba traditions, literature, philosophy, religion, theatre and oral storytelling.
His childhood experiences had a major influence on his later filmmaking career. He was particularly fascinated by Yoruba theatre and encountered works such as The Palm-Wine Drinkard, Oba Koso and Kurunmi while growing up.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Kelani attended Oke-Ona Primary School in Ikija, Abeokuta, before proceeding to Abeokuta Grammar School for his secondary education. After secondary school, he trained as a cameraman at Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) in Ibadan. He later travelled to the United Kingdom and attended the London Film School, where he obtained a Diploma in the Art and Technique of Filmmaking.
CAREER
Tunde Kelani began his professional television career in 1970 as a trainee cameraman with Western Nigeria Television. His career later expanded into photography, cinematography, television production and filmmaking. During the 1970s, he worked with international media organizations including the BBC and Reuters, as well as Nigerian television. His work as a cinematographer gave him extensive experience in documenting events and telling stories through visual media.
In 1991, Kelani founded Mainframe Films and Television Productions, a company established partly to document and promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. His filmmaking career produced several critically acclaimed works, including Ti Oluwa Ni Ile, Ayo Ni Mo Fe, Koseegbe, Oleku, Saworoide, Thunderbolt: Magun, Agogo Eewo, The Campus Queen, Abeni, The Narrow Path, Arugba, Maami and Dazzling Mirage.
